We have been working really hard on our speeches in Room 5 and most of us have finished writing them. We have been using the 'S.E.X.Y' format (Statement, Example, Explanation, Your Opinion) to write each paragraph and are now ready to memorise our speeches and practice speaking in front of others. Our practice with impromptu speaking has helped with our confidence speaking in front of peers. Lets have a look at the assessment schedule and see what we will be marked on.

Rules:

The winner can choose who serves, sides etc
The ball must bounce on the table once before being hit/returned.
The table is divided into 2 parts - the ball must bounce on the opposite side.
Can be singles or doubles.
Each player serves 2 points in a row and then switch server.
You need to score 11 points to win the match. If both players/team have 10 you must play on until either player/team has a 2point lead.
You must not have a 'double bounce'.

Techniques:

The Drive - is a light top spin strike that produces a low ball.
The Push - a basic back spin stroke.

This week we are holding a mufti day to raise money and grocery items for two really good causes both locally and nationally. We will be donating the grocery hamper to a family in our school who has recently lost someone close and the money we raise will be donated to the people affected by the Christchurch earthquake. We would also like to write letters to children in Christchurch that have been affected and let them know that our thoughts are with them.

This week we have been following the reports about the earthquake that affected Christchurch on Saturday. Many people have been effected and may not be able to return to their homes for weeks or even months. It is a miracle that nobody was seriously injured or killed in the incident.

Use the internet (the NZ Herald website is great for information) to find out more about the quake and the effects it has had on people. Try to answer these questions:

Just in the middle of a session at Southwell today and guess what?? This guy Ewan McIntosh was talking all about how important it is to 'share our learning' - 'share our mistakes' so others can learn from our mistakes. This guy is from Scotland and has come all the way to NZ to share his ideas with NZ teachers so that we can become better teachers.

He was making a point about taking 15min at the end of each lesson to reflect on our learning, to see:

What have we learnt?

How do we now?

What do we need to do next? How will we do that?

I was thinking - cool we are already doing that!!!!! Then I was thinking - does this really help you as a learner? and if so how?

Today we are focused on Writing an Orientation – the orientation is always at the beginning of a narrative and tells us about the setting and characters. An orientation hooks the reader while letting the audience know about setting and main characters. Usually answers who? when? where? eg. Mr Wolf went out hunting in the forest one dark gloomy night.

We have been exploring narratives for the past 5 weeks. Today we have had a quick look at what we have learnt so far. Our Learning Logs or blogs now have these samples:

1. Brainstorm on 'What we have learnt so far about narratives…..'
2. Writing sample which we have annotated.

Writing Sample Scenario

People and things are not always what they seem to be. Sometimes there is a sense of mystery behind people and their lives. Write an imaginative story about a family who are not quite what they seem, and how their secret is discovered. Don't be limited by your own experiences. Write the story so that young people in secondary school will enjoy reading it.

Hints

Plan your story before you write.

Include an interesting title for your story.

Write a beginning which attracts attention and an ending which is satisfying for the reader.

Use an interesting and logical structure in which story elements are introduced and developed.

Use descriptive words and images so the reader can imagine the characters and places in your story.

Make use of the time at the end of the task to edit your writing, paying attention to grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Hinuera ignimbrite

Hinuera ignimbrite (often marketed as Hinuera stone) is a yellow-cream to pale-brown ignimbrite containing angular fragments of pumice in a fine-grained matrix of volcanic ash. It is still quarried today, and widely used for cladding buildings in the North Island.

Earth also received meteorite hits but contrary to the moon today they are hard to make out - partially because of all the vegetation we have  in contrast but also because of the lack of erosional forces that lack on the moon in contrast to Earth.

A television station is advertising for teenagers to enter a competition for a free 'room makeover'. If you win, your room will be transformed into the room of your dreams. Your plans should be considerate of the needs of all the people who live in your house, as well as giving you a dream bedroom. Write a description of how you would like your room transformed.

The entry form asks you to:

Monday 22 March - Reflection Example:

Today I learnt how to multiply numbers by 10's, 100's and 1000's. For example, 6 x 200. I can do 6 x 2 which = 12 and multiply 12 by 100 because 200 is a 100 times larger than 2. So 6 x 200 = 1200.

I also learnt not to flinch when you get an injection because you have to have 2 injections instead of 1!!

Wow what an awesome class we have this year :-) A reminder that swimming starts tomorrow please remember to bring your togs.

As the newsletter said today NO MORE HOMEWORK!!! or at least not how you remember it :-)

Do you know that homework can only have a minimal impact on your child’s learning. What can have a HUGE impact is when students become reflective about their learning. A way that we like to encourage that here at SAMS is to allows students to blog. What is a blog? A blog is a web space that students can design and use much like a dairy. We have set up a class blog where you can individually access your child’s blog. Our blogs will have a very clear focus: to help us think about and reflect on ourselves as learners. To help demonstrate progress with our learning. To help show our parents what our learning looks like in class. Here is a quick youtube explanation of blogs.
