During term 3 for Social Science, Year 9 and 10 students have been learning about school induction and transition programmes. We have been interested in this because many of us will be leaving SAMS next year and progressing into year 11 and those who are staying will be helping to welcome new students into the school.
Last term, we invited principals from Hamilton Girls High School, Pukete Primary and our own principal, Mr. Jackson to speak to us about the programmes they run in their schools and to get their ideas about what is important about induction and transition for students who are new or leaving the school.
We were also lucky enough to have Jerry Sullivan from the ministry of education visit. He was able to give us a lot of ideas and advice from his experience in education.
Some of the questions we came up with were; how does induction and transition work? Who runs the programme? How important is it? How does it affect the school? After gathering and recording all of the information, and working in groups to do a lot of research, we realised that with all the new ideas we had, we would like to work towards improving the induction/ transition programme here at SAMS.
During term 4, we will be working in small groups to producing a new/ improved induction and transition programme for our school that we are aiming to present to a panel of principals in week 6.
