Not long to go!!!!

We have been working really hard on our speeches in Room 5 and most of us have finished writing them. We have been using the 'S.E.X.Y' format (Statement, Example, Explanation, Your Opinion) to write each paragraph and are now ready to memorise our speeches and practice speaking in front of others. Our practice with impromptu speaking has helped with our confidence speaking in front of peers. Lets have a look at the assessment schedule and see what we will be marked on.

Statistics

This Term in maths we will be learning about:
STATISTICS
What do we know already about this topic and why do we need to learn about it?

Statistics:
In the world around us, information is recorded using statistical tools such as graphs and tables. The ability to read these graphs and charts is very important in understanding the world we live in. You will see that graphs and charts are used in newspapers, television, books and elsewhere.

This term we will be learning to:
  • Interpret information from graphs
  • Make statements based on data shown in graphs
  • Identify the most suitable graph to show survey results
  • Write questions for statistical investigations
  • Collect and display data in an appropriate format
  • Make conclusions about statistical investigations

What makes a good group member?

In Room 5 we have been working in groups for our inquiry/ induction and transition project. Today, we looked at what makes a successful group and what a good group member looks like and recorded our ideas on this bubblus. We feel that forming a strong group is extremely important in making this inquiry a success and are working toward becoming more successful 'Sams Contributors'.

Y9/10 Induction/ Transition Programme

Mufti Day on Friday

This week we are holding a mufti day to raise money and grocery items for two really good causes both locally and nationally. We will be donating the grocery hamper to a family in our school who has recently lost someone close and the money we raise will be donated to the people affected by the Christchurch earthquake. We would also like to write letters to children in Christchurch that have been affected and let them know that our thoughts are with them.

Finding out about the Christchurch Earthquake

This week we have been following the reports about the earthquake that affected Christchurch on Saturday. Many people have been effected and may not be able to return to their homes for weeks or even months. It is a miracle that nobody was seriously injured or killed in the incident.

Use the internet (the NZ Herald website is great for information) to find out more about the quake and the effects it has had on people. Try to answer these questions:

Who did it affect?
What happened?
When did it happen?
Where was most effected?
Why did it happen?
How will the damage be fixed?

The Tinkering School

Check this out - just watched it and I am amazed!!!

Sharing our Learning

Just in the middle of a session at Southwell today and guess what?? This guy Ewan McIntosh was talking all about how important it is to 'share our learning' - 'share our mistakes' so others can learn from our mistakes. This guy is from Scotland and has come all the way to NZ to share his ideas with NZ teachers so that we can become better teachers.

He was making a point about taking 15min at the end of each lesson to reflect on our learning, to see:

What have we learnt?
How do we now?
What do we need to do next? How will we do that?

I was thinking - cool we are already doing that!!!!! Then I was thinking - does this really help you as a learner? and if so how?

Place a comment against this post to let me know what you think :-)

Complication in Narratives

Today we learnt that in narrative writing there is an orientation, complication and resolution. The orientation comes first then the complication/problem and the resolution/solution.
Written by Shaolin, Aaron, Liam, Paul, Brock and Maria.PowerPoint on Narrative
View more presentations from Natalie.

Writing an Orientation

Today we are focused on Writing an Orientation – the orientation is always at the beginning of a narrative and tells us about the setting and characters. An orientation hooks the reader while letting the audience know about setting and main characters. Usually answers who? when? where? eg. Mr Wolf went out hunting in the forest one dark gloomy night.

Success criteria –

- Describe the setting

- Describe the Main Characters

- Similie/metaphor

- Consider First/third person

- use Adjectives to help our description

Annotate our Writing Samples

Today we are going to Annotate the sample using rubrics. Annotate means to find specific features in our text/writing and to highlight it and write out to the side 'what the work shows'.

Today we will be looking for the following:

Rubrics is here

Through annotating our work we can become better writers!!!

Narrative Writing Sample

We have been exploring narratives for the past 5 weeks. Today we have had a quick look at what we have learnt so far. Our Learning Logs or blogs now have these samples:

1. Brainstorm on 'What we have learnt so far about narratives…..'
2. Writing sample which we have annotated.

Writing Sample Scenario
People and things are not always what they seem to be. Sometimes there is a sense of mystery behind people and their lives. Write an imaginative story about a family who are not quite what they seem, and how their secret is discovered. Don't be limited by your own experiences. Write the story so that young people in secondary school will enjoy reading it.

Hints

Plan your story before you write.

Include an interesting title for your story.

Write a beginning which attracts attention and an ending which is satisfying for the reader.

Use an interesting and logical structure in which story elements are introduced and developed.

Use descriptive words and images so the reader can imagine the characters and places in your story.

Make use of the time at the end of the task to edit your writing, paying attention to grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Maths Week Success

Last week we had Maths week and it was really challenging. The whole school ran a competition to see who could get highest points on the Mathsweek website. Room 5 took all the PRIZES!!!!

Rock Types

We are going to have a look at rock types through using these 2 webquests below.
Discover How Rocks Are Formed
Students will work on these in pairs. Students will need to compile basic research notes as they go - you may choose which format is best for you for note taking.
Add 3 things to rock types vocab list as you go - remember once it's on the vocab list you can't add it again, so search for interesting information that others will enjoy reading!! :-)

Post your notes here

Hinuera ignimbrite

Hinuera ignimbrite (often marketed as Hinuera stone) is a yellow-cream to pale-brown ignimbrite containing angular fragments of pumice in a fine-grained matrix of volcanic ash. It is still quarried today, and widely used for cladding buildings in the North Island.
Andesite
Andesite is a fine-grained, extrusive igneous rock composed mainly of plagioclase with other minerals such as hornblende, pyroxene and biotite. The specimen shown is about two inches (five centimeters) across.

The Moon

Moon Information page and a comparision between the Moon and the Earth.
Some Moon Facts from Kathrin via email - difference between Earth and Moon and how landforms were created Moon had very active volcanism in it's early history - there are still remnants of volcanoes, but most of all Moon was heavily bombarded by meteorites causing many of the craters we can see today. Earth also received meteorite hits but contrary to the moon today they are hard to make out - partially because of all the vegetation we have in contrast but also because of the lack of erosional forces that lack on the moon in contrast to Earth.

Reminders for Parents

A few reminders as we near the holidays.

  1. All students need to have covered in shoes for Hard Materials every Monday morning.
  2. All students need to pay for swimming tuition from February if they haven't already.
  3. All students need to pay the $30 school event fees - we have been to the Science Road Show already as a part of this cost.
  4. All Learning Logs and Technology folders need to be back at school so that students can continue their fantastic work :-)
Thanks so much for helping us out :-)

Homework for Week 8

This weeks homework could be a mixture of the following:
(keeping in mind 1 hour per night)

  • Showing someone else around your blog
  • You could even get parents to leave comments as a part of your homework :-)
  • Playing learning objects from reading, maths or writing
  • adding something of my own choice - remember it must meet the goals before you decide to add it to your blog. It could even be your favorite band - but you will need to write a few sentences to explain why you like them and why you have added them :-)
  • reflect on your learning each day - see example below :-)

Monday 22 March - Reflection Example:

Today I learnt how to multiply numbers by 10's, 100's and 1000's. For example, 6 x 200. I can do 6 x 2 which = 12 and multiply 12 by 100 because 200 is a 100 times larger than 2. So 6 x 200 = 1200.

I also learnt not to flinch when you get an injection because you have to have 2 injections instead of 1!!
